Anyone can carry his burden, however hard, until nightfall. Anyone can do his work, however hard, for one day. Anyone can live sweetly, patiently, lovingly, purely, till the sun goes down. And this is all life really means.

WASHINGTON — The White House is now open for Christmas.
First lady Michelle Obama, along with daughters Malia and Sasha, received the official White House Christmas tree on Friday: an 18 1/2-foot Douglas fir delivered from a farm in Shepherdstown, W.Va., by traditional horse-drawn carriage. Growers Eric and Gloria Sundback officially presented it to the family.
It’s the fourth time one of the Sundback’s trees has been selected for the White House.
The tree is destined for the Blue Room, where scores of volunteers will decorate it. The tree will be the star attraction of Christmas at the White House, seen by thousands of people at holiday parties and on public tours of the executive mansion.
Next Thursday, the Obamas will flip a switch to light the National Christmas Tree on the Ellipse.

I hope they put these disgusting people in jail (at least for trespassing and lying to the Secret Service) and for embarrasing the Obamas and wasting our time. They are pathetic, selfish people, that’s who the climbers at the gate are. It is interesting that invited guest Brian Williams observed, but was apparently unaware of, the shenanigans being orchestrated by his network, NBC’s sister network, Bravo. The entire charade of reality TV distracts this country from our real problems, real accomplishments, and real blessings.

Guest chef raids White House garden for big dinner
By NANCY BENAC
The Associated Press
Tuesday, November 24, 2009 5:04 PMWASHINGTON — On a damp, chilly Tuesday, guest chef Marcus Samuelsson was still out tromping around the White House garden picking herbs for that evening’s state dinner at the White House.
Samuelsson, the award-winning chef of Aquavit, a Scandinavian restaurant in New York City, was brought in by first lady Michelle Obama to help prepare a largely vegetarian meal in honor of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who is vegetarian. At an afternoon preview of the dinner, Mrs. Obama called Samuelsson “one of the finest chefs in the country.”
Samuelsson’s mission: dinner for 320 using fresh, sustainable and regional foods that reflect the best of American cuisine and evoke the flavors of India.
The result: a menu featuring potato and eggplant salad, red lentil soup and roasted potato dumplings or green curry prawns.
Samuelsson, who was born in Ethiopia, raised in Sweden and recently became a U.S. citizen, was out in the garden Monday night and Tuesday harvesting pineapple sage and arugula for the salad, oregano and thyme for the vinaigrette, fresh dill to garnish the soup, and thyme and marjoram for the curry paste. In addition, he selected garden herbs to garnish plates and trays of passed appetizers.
At age 39, Samuelsson has a resume that most chefs can only dream of. A graduate of the Culinary Institute in Gothenburg, Sweden, he was hired as Aquavit’s executive chef in 1995 and three months later got a three-star review from The New York Times. He received the James Beard Foundation Award for “Rising Star Chef” in 1999 and was named “Best Chef, New York” in 2003. Samuelsson is the author of four cookbooks, most recently “New American Table.”
Samuelsson was too busy fixing dinner on Tuesday to do interviews. But he said in a statement: “As a new American, it is particularly humbling to be part of the exciting and progressive direction the White House is pursuing in all things related to our rich diverse culinary heritage.”
Samuelsson worked with White House executive chef Cristeta Comerford on the meal. The desserts - including pumpkin pie tarts and pear tatin - came courtesy of Pastry Chef Bill Yosses and his team. The pears were poached in honey from the White House beehive, and the desserts were garnished with mint and lemon verbena from the garden.
So tired
a huge turkey that took forever to cook, too many vegetables to name, several kinds of wine, 4 pies, 1 husband, 2 daughters, one friend from South Dakota, one brother, 7 barking dogs, 6 turkey stalking cats, 10 loads of laundry, Gin Rummy and Scrabble, and a Christmas carol sing-a-long. A quiet Thanksgiving at Camp Chaos. Time for some coffee. Happy Day after Thanksgiving. I hope you were all happy. Get some rest. BBL.
Irena Sendler
1910-2008
A 98 year-old German woman named Irena Sendler recently died. During WWII, Irena worked in the Warsaw Ghetto as a plumbing/sewer specialist. Irena smuggled Jewish children out; infants in the bottom of the tool box she carried and older children in a burlap sack she carried in the back of her truck. She also had a dog in the back that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in and out of the ghetto. The soldiers wanted nothing to do with the dog, and the barking covered the kids’ and infants’ noises. Irena managed to smuggle out and save 2500 children. She eventually was caught, and the Nazis broke both her legs, arms and beat her severely. Irena kept a record of the names of all the kids she smuggled out and kept them in a glass jar buried under a tree in her backyard. After the war, she tried to locate any parents that may have survived and reunited some of the families. Most had been killed. She helped those children get placement into foster family homes or adopted.
Last year Irena was up for the Nobel Peace Prize. She was not selected. Al Gore won - for a slide show on Global Warming.
